An Oasis for Analog Photography
In the heart of Lisbon, where the sun-dappled streets weave through vibrant neighborhoods, a new haven for analog photography was born. This is the story of TAB LAB, an analog photography darkroom founded out of necessity, passion, and a profound desire to share the art of ecological printing with a welcoming community.
It all started when…
The Genesis: A Quest for Self-Printing
In the bustling heart of Lisboa, amid vibrant colors and dynamic culture, I yearned for a space where the art of analog photography could thrive. My journey began with a simple yet profound need: to print my own photographs. However, I quickly discovered that there were no accessible darkrooms for this craft. This absence sparked a desire to create one, not just for myself, but for the growing community of analog photography enthusiasts.
A Conversation with Manon Klein
My passion for this project found a crucial ally in Manon Klein, an esteemed art worker, critic, and curator. Over countless conversations about art and the essence of photography, Manon encouraged my idea and provided crucial connections. She introduced me to Benoit Gauthier, the director of FOCO art gallery, whose enthusiasm for the arts matched my own.
The Catalyst: Benoit Gauthier
Benoit saw the potential in my vision and offered not just support but also guidance. He connected me with Amande Haeghen, a talented designer known for her collectible ceramic pieces. Meeting Amande was serendipitous. Our initial meeting revealed a shared love for art, family, and the ocean, forming a bond that transcended mere professional collaboration. Amande became a pivotal figure just like that. She had just founded the art residency House of Haeg to welcome her design studio and more. These commonalities laid the foundation for what would soon become TAB LAB, hosted at House of Haeg.
Building the Darkroom: A Space for Community and Creativity
The idea for TAB LAB was born out of these rich conversations and shared values. It was envisioned as a community hub—a place where photographers could gather, share knowledge, and inspire one another. We named it TAB LAB, symbolizing a table of collaboration and creativity. Through workshops and mentoring sessions, we aim to impart the skills and joys of analog and ecological printing to others. The darkroom is a living space for photo enthusiasts to experiment, learn, and grow together.
Giving Back to Lisbon
The Lisbon community had welcomed me with open arms, and now it was my turn to give back. TAB LAB is designed not just for my own needs but as a resource for others. Building TAB LAB was a labor of love, driven by the warmth and welcome I had received from the Lisboa community. I wanted to create a space where photo lovers can gather, share their work, and grow together. It is a way to contribute to the vibrant cultural tapestry of the city that has embraced me so wholeheartedly.
Meeting Sarah Neale: A New Chapter
As TAB LAB flourished, I met Sarah Neale, a talented studio photographer. Her energy and creativity were infectious, and I knew immediately that she would be a perfect fit for TAB LAB. I invited Sarah to join the project, and together, we began to envision the future of our photography studio. Her expertise and enthusiasm added a new dimension to the space, making it not just a darkroom, but a dynamic hub for photographic exploration and innovation.
TAB LAB Today
Today, TAB LAB is an oasis for those who cherish the tactile and ecological aspects of analog photography. It fosters the hands-on process of developing photographs and serves as an educational hub where the art of ecological printing is shared and celebrated. TAB LAB stands as a testament to the power of community, collaboration, and the enduring appeal of traditional photographic methods. Here, we celebrate the beauty of handcrafted images, the joy of shared knowledge, and the bonds formed through a common passion. Through TAB LAB, the vibrant Lisbon community continues to grow.

Workshops
Our priority is to create an active space for the local film community, and the best way to achieve this is by sharing knowledge. Come join us for one of our many classes and workshops. Learn the joys of developing at home or print your own works in the darkroom. There's something for everyone! Workshop - Black and White Film Developing and Printing Course €290.00 Duration: 6 hours Next date: May 10, 12:00 PM to 6:30 PM Description: Learn how to develop your own black and white film, then print it in the darkroom in this 6.5-hour class! We'll meet you at the workshop for a brief presentation. You'll then receive a roll of 35mm black and white film of your choice, and we'll set off for a quick photography walk around the neighborhood. Once back, we'll provide you with all the information and techniques you need to develop the film you've just printed. Then, after a brief introduction to the world of darkroom printing, you'll create a contact sheet from your freshly developed film and then print as many images as you can! What's included in this class? All the necessary developing materials are provided, including a roll of 35mm film and darkroom paper. We only ask that you bring your camera and lunch. Don't have a camera? You can also rent one of ours for the day*. The class is multilingual and will be taught in Portuguese, English, and French, depending on the participants. *A small fee of 10 euros applies. Payable on the day.

Join us on for a brief introduction, then head to Darkroom to learn how to print your own photos using our high-end enlargers!
The course lasts approximately 4 hours*. At the end of the course, you can take your print home.

In this course, you will learn about density, contracting, warping, and burning, as well as other techniques to better control your printing process. It is suitable for intermediate-level printers who need to improve their skills. The training is personalized based on the areas in which you want to strengthen your skills. Choose your exercises and perfect your technique with a trainer on hand. The course lasts approximately 4 hours*. At the end of the course, you can take your prints home.
